The company was started by Irish entrepreneurs John and Patrick Collison, and they are brothers. The company started in 2009 in Palo Alto, California. Within only two years, the company received funding of $2 million. Paypal was one of the companies that funded Stripe. The company got funding from Liam Casey, Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, and SV Angel. After two years, the company started a task-management application, which was an acquisition of the company.

In 2012, the headquarters of the company changed as the new location became San Francisco. There were other changes as well, like moving to Oyster Point in South San Francisco.
